Is Hail Increasing In Colorado Part 2

So now that we know hail in Denver and beyond may be increasing--we have to ask ourselves why? And what in the world are you supposed to do about it?

So now that we know hail in Denver and beyond may be increasing–we have to ask ourselves why? And what in the world are you supposed to do about it?

Why Hail Is Increasing In Hail Alley

To put it simply–we now have a warmer climate that is conducive to hail events. As Russ Schumacher, head of the climate center puts it:

“Warm, moist conditions are favorable for severe weather. There’s more instability in the atmosphere, and storms that form are even stronger and capable of producing really big hail.”

How To Mitigate increasing Hail Damage

So, now that we know that hail is on the rise and may well be for some time–what can we do about it? A farmer, for instance, can’t get up and move his fields to avoid damage. However, there are 3 things you can do for things like car damage or damage to your home.

  1. Always Carry Hail Insurance: Considered an “act of God” therefore Both hail and storm damage is covered on car insurance policies that have “comprehensive coverage” on the damaged vehicle. In homes, hail damage is one of the most common claims, accounting for nearly 70 percent of insured property losses. For this reason, basic homeowner’s insurance policies usually cover structural property damage from hail. It is called “dwelling protection coverage” or sometimes referred to as Coverage A.
  2. Buy Hail Resistant Products: While you can stop hail from happening there are products for siding and roofing for instance that are hail resistant. Living in an area like Denver long-term, it may be worth it for you to consider paying a bit more for products like these rather than suffer increasingly higher insurance premiums.
  3. Moving Cars, Animals and People Inside During Storms: As these hail storms we are seeing in Denver increase, it is critical people respond accordingly. If you see dark clouds on the horizon or get a warning of potential hail on your phone–act quickly. Because if hail is truely getting worse–it could become deadly. Move your car to the garage, bring your pets inside and stay inside until the storm is well past.

Since, hail is going to happen no matter what though, our best chance at avoiding extensive hail damage long-term is by figuring out how hail develops and better predicting its movements. But predicting hail can be tough. In the next blog in our “Increasing Hail” series will explain why this is so hard and new technologies that are helping hail predicting.

In the meantime, reach out to us at United Hail Pros if you have hail damage you would like repaired via paintless dent repair or traditional dent repair. Hail happens and sometimes your car gets hit–no matter how hard you try to avoid it. We will get you back on the road quickly and with no out of pocket expenses when this happens–so the hail here in Denver won’t get you down for long!
