How Is Hail Possible In Denver During This August Heat Wave?

With the incredibly hot weather that has scorched the Denver area this August, it is hard to believe we are still in hail season.

With the incredibly hot weather that has scorched the Denver area this August, it is hard to believe we are still in hail season.  But the fact of the matter is, even with record-setting heat (On Monday we broke a 33-year heat record here in Denver by reaching 99 degrees)–hail is still a very real threat.  Because, believe it or not, Hail Formation Does Not Have Much to Do with the Season.

How Hail Forms In The Hot Denver Weather

Hail forms even in the incredibly hot Denver summers because the hot air rises and causes updrafts.  Essentially carrying droplets of water high enough into the extremely cold atmosphere that they freeze.  The hotter the weather, the stronger the updraft can be–allowing hailstones to grow large. Once the hailstones grow heavy enough they fall back to earth–and right towards your car.  Small hailstones usually melt before reaching the ground, but the larger ones do hit the ground and can cause extensive damage. So even on the hottest, sunniest days in Denver–hail is almost always a possibility.

More Hail Possible Tuesday And Thursday In Denver

So as we mentioned the summer heat is not a barrier to hail falling–even upwards of 95 degree days. The bad news is beginning around 3 p.m. today there’s a 10 percent chance for rain and thunderstorms in Denver–possibly even hail. By the evening, the likelihood of this storm will increase to 40 percent. There is an even higher chance of egg-sized hail hitting the plains just east of Denver. However, the good news is–the Tuesday storms here in the Mile High City should cool Wednesday off a bit with temperatures reaching about 84 degrees. By Thursday higher 87-degree temperatures and isolated afternoon rain showers and thunderstorms could occur again–both in Denver and on the Eastern Plains.
