Modern Auto Paint Colors: White, Beige, Black And Boring

So, what happened to the bright metallics car colors of the ’60s? Or the earthy orange and browns of the ’70s? The answer is not all that clear but rather a combination of things that lead us to today’s blase car colors.

Our Devices Are Driving Our Auto Color Choices

In today’s society, we use a lot of devices– like a real lot. And as it turns out, while there are some colors to choose from, many of them come in whites, greys, and blacks. Computers, cellphones, laptops, and pads. This, according to Barb Whalen, designer manager, at Ford Motor Company is why white is so very popular–Apple products moved white into an incredibly trendy color, not just for phones but life and all our accessories–automobiles included. As it happens, white, black and grey are all variants of the same hue, so all three tend to be tried and true colors car manufacturers will use.

Furthermore, the consensus with colors on modern vehicle models seems to be “Certain colors are appropriate for certain vehicles”. In other words, the bright candy apple red you see on a Mustang probably isn’t something people want on, say, an F150 truck.

Another interesting reason current consumers seem to prefer bland rather than bold colors? Recessions. That’s right, during times of economic downturns, the public looks for neutral colors in its cars. And, in case you haven’t noticed the 2000s have been chalked full of booms, busts, and recessions aplenty–leading to an overall preference for boring colors.

Is The Future Of Auto Colors Bright?

The answer is a solid–it depends. For one, a time of prolonged economic stability will help more and more color to come back to cars. But there still are new trends insinuating themselves into the car world these days. Maybe not bright colors but– a “stealth” trend of matte paint colors and dark windows. Matte, as it were, has become a status symbol for car owners of late.  Perhaps one day we will all be able to customize our cars to any color we want but, don’t plan on that anytime soon. For now, if you want a unique or bold color, most dealers offer a couple of options of trendy colors and given the US’s penchant for a run of the mill color choices–you probably won’t have a problem snatching one up!
